Chances of having a lupus flare when stopping plaquenil

So far I have no more energy than when I first started and has developed neuropathy which I have just found out from Web MD that this neuropathy is one of the side effects of this med! Saying that by stopping this it would take another 6 months to build up the benefit. There are other meds that can help with what you are experiencing, and if your doctor didn't address that then I would seek out a second opinion... Please don't stop your plaquenil until you are sure it is the right thing to do and in your best interest.

I have also been on Plaquenil for about 2 1/2 years. I have Lupus and Sjogrens. I have had a bad flare for about 3 months, doing some better now, but I also wondered if I wasn't back sliding. I felt so much better for a little over 2 years. I hurt so bad and am so tired and weak. I have to force myself to get anything done. I have read about people stopping P & flaring up. Those who stopped it abruptly had real problems similar to what you are experiencing. If you really need to get off it, I would taper down slowly, very slowly. There is a similar posting on Healthunlocked, "Why oh why did u stop taking plaquenil." You may want to check it out. So it's very possible to be on Plaquenil without having a formal Lupus diagnosis. To get a Lupus diganosis you need to have 4 or more of 11 Lupus criteria, within a 5 year period. A lot of people have less than 4, or as in my case, more than 4 but spread out over much more than 5 years.

Plaquenil is a 6-weeker as far as the benefits are concerned, but it would be more dangerous to stop if you spend a lot of time outside and if this were the summer. Or maybe another doctor if you're not comfortable w/your current one.
