    Zoloft long term effects

Forty-two adult female cynomolgus macaques consuming a Western diet were characterized during an 18-month pretreatment phase and assigned to SSRI (sertraline hydrochloride 20 mg/kg, per os, once a day) or placebo balanced on pretreatment . CAA, analyzed by a 2 (depressed, nondepressed) × 2 (placebo, sertraline) × 3 (coronary arteries) analysis of covariance adjusted for pretreatment iliac atherosclerosis, was greater in depressed than in nondepressed monkeys ( = .040). The observed CAA extent in depressed monkeys treated with sertraline was 4.9 times higher than that in untreated depressed monkeys, and 6.5 times higher than that in nondepressed monkeys, on average. Antidepressants features thousands of potential side effects, and most side effects that emerge during the use of Zoloft tend to continue throughout treatment rather than fading away. There is also the concern of new or worsening side effects and withdrawal effects if Zoloft is discontinued. SSRIs cause withdrawal syndrome in the majority of patients, and even tapering off slowly will not necessarily prevent additional side effects from occurring. Sometimes missed doses, late doses, dose reductions, or medication switches can precipitate withdrawal syndrome even if someone is still taking Zoloft. While reinstatement of the last stable dose can sometimes alleviate withdrawal symptoms, it is not a guarantee (and sometimes further drugging can make a withdrawal state even worse). Antidepressants Involve Long Term Risks In the situation of long term treatment, continuing to take a brain-altering drug means you subject yourself to the same risks of short term and long term side effects on an ongoing basis, and new side effects or complications can appear after any length of time---days, weeks, months, years, decades.

Be sure to visit your doctor regularly during the first 12 weeks that you are using Zoloft so that the medicine's effect on you can be monitored. cheapest high street pharmacy for viagra Physicians are seeing long-term side effects with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors far in excess of what was expected from clinical trial data, Dr. Norman Sussman said at a psychopharmacology update sponsored by New York University. Jul 15, 2012. In her bestselling 1997 memoir Prozac Nation, Elizabeth Wurtzel was already expressing concern about the long-term effects of her new.

I have been on Zoloft for 3 months now and feel too like it has changed my life. I take 25 mg a day, and no longer get nervous in groups of people or dread social situations. I used to worry about EVERYTHING, but now I don't let things get me down. I can, however, feel some "twitching" (for lack of a better term) going on in my brain which makes me think about brain aneurysms. Iam weening off effexor right now and it is very hard because I was on a high dosage for a long time. I"m curious about the long term effects of Zoloft use on the brain. Hi, I only took zoloft for about 2 weeks and this was 7 years ago. I have been put on zoloft and taken off over the years and even though it did seem to work in keeping me active and focused I dealt with alot of side effects from the drug... Insomnia, clenching teeth, a little nervous, extremely dialated pupils... rubbing and scratching at times and a few other's... I was then put on klonopin at one time .05 to offset the side effects and shaking from alcohol withdrawal, and then switched to diazepam. Zoloft is the only other psych med that I have been on for about as long as Celexa which I am on now and have been taking for about a year... In her bestselling 1997 memoir Prozac Nation, Elizabeth Wurtzel was already expressing concern about the long-term effects of her new antidepressant: “I can’t help feeling that anything that works so effectively, so transformative, has got to be hurting me at another end, maybe sometime further down the road. I can just hear the words inoperable brain cancer being whispered to me by some physician 20 years from now.” But 15 years after Wurtzel’s memoir, Prozac is no longer considered to be so transformative—or even so effective. According to the research of Harvard Medical School’s Irving Kirsch, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), the broad category of drugs including Prozac, Zoloft, and Lexapro, are more effective than placebos only in cases of severe depression. But 10 percent of the American population continues to take them because the message from psychiatrists and from the culture more broadly is, “Why not? ”We still don’t have a conclusive answer about whether antidepressants work, or about their long-term effects. Tentative hypotheses suggest that feedback mechanisms could permanently alter serotonin levels in the brain, but unsurprisingly, pharmaceutical companies are not eager to fund this kind of research. There is also another reason for the startling lack of long-term safety studies: the Federal Drug Administration doesn’t require them. Wonder drugs or not, it is now considered culturally acceptable to take SSRIs indefinitely.

I know I’ve said this before, but I’ll say it again. I’ve been wanting to get over these feelings I’ve been having for quite some time now. Of course, the reason I am on it is that the alternative situation is worse: sinking into severe depression. At my worst, I feel so unmotivated and heavy in my chest that it seems that if I were to stop moving, I’d fall over and just lie on the ground till I expired. But lately, over this last winter, I’ve been noticing other things about my state of mind. I’ve upped my dose of Prozac to 40 mg daily from 20 mg daily, but it doesn’t seem to be any better than when I was taking 30 mg. And these clue me in to the fact that the medication isn’t really helping, or at least it isn’t bringing me to the level of normal emotional functioning. I’ve been really searching for alternatives to taking this medication. Currently, I’m suffering from anhedonia—the inability to experience pleasure. And nothing looks appealing enough to pursue, either. I’ve just lost vision—there’s nothing to work towards. Neither my mentor nor my girlfriend understand why I am taking this medication, perhaps because there is no concept of clinical depression in the Chinese mindspace, or perhaps because medicine isn’t something you take forever. And it is related to another symptom: lack of motivation. In fact, I feel like an old person just waiting to die, like I’ve experienced all that life has to offer and that I, at some point, stumbled upon what I was supposed to do in this life, and now there’s nothing left to do or work towards. It’s this last self-revelation that told me that I might not be normal. I know this because I can still concentrate enough to read (and apparently write), I get my work done every week (editing research papers), and I manage (most of the time) to drag myself to Swing Dancing three times a week (which is where my friends are). I hope that this blog entry will at least help them to see that my depression is real and that (perhaps) the medication is keeping me afloat. It’s hard to know what normal is, even for the healthy, but I can’t imagine that most people are walking around out there just waiting to die. I don’t really want to see how far I would sink if I were to stop taking it. How Does Zoloft Work?
